Weekly Obsessions

Obviously AUTUMN is my biggest obsession this week. Cooler days and perfect weather give me a legit reason to wear boots and jeans, which are two of my favorite things. Also, I like that no one judged me when I bought pumpkins at the grocery store. Also, fall means it’s candle season, and I love candles! (My faves right now are locally made by Soy Much Brighter!)

Speaking of jeans, LOFT JEANS are my next obsession. Specifically the Boyfriend cut. Guys, I haven’t worn anything else the last two weeks. #honestmoment

KAYAKING AT SUNSET: Last Sunday evening Nate and I kayaked with a couple of our friends down the Charles River (the only really good place to kayak in our area). We ended up staying out there for about 2 hours and caught the sun as it set behind the trees. It was so beautiful and I was really happy!

JOHNNYSWIM: A friend recently introduced me to Johnnyswim’s music and holy moly, I’m seriously obsessed! (which is why they’re on this list, duh). The harmonies of this talented guy/girl duo are perfection and I just really love their style! They’re coming to Boston in December, so you can bet I’m gonna buy a ticket. *thumbs up emoji*

2 Fall Coffee Hacks that Save Money!

Hey friends! Ya’ll know I’m a coffee person. Like the GOOD. STRONG. YUM. type of coffee person. Being a coffee person can be expensive if you’re buying it every morning before work. I’m sharing 2 easy coffee hacks for FALL that will also save you a little money (and perhaps a few calories, too!) I do both of these things on the regular!

Brew your own – and add PUMPKIN PIE SPICE. 
Get up a little earlier to brew your own coffee, but first, add pumpkin pie spice! Add about a spoonful of the spice right in with your coffee grounds (it works in both drip coffee machines and french presses). The fall-y smell will fill the kitchen and you’ll get a taste of pumpkin, too! A spin on this is adding cinnamon for an equally great fall vibe. (A nice bag of ground coffee is between $8-10. If you use it over 10 mornings, it’s about $1 per brew.)

Skip the latte – ask for pumpkin SYRUP in black coffee.
When you’re out and about and are craving something pumpkin-y, skip the PSL. Instead, ask your barista for black coffee with pumpkin syrup! Most baristas at Starbucks, Dunkin or Peet’s have the syrup on hand and will oblige (at least it’s never been a problem when I ask.) (Lattes average at around $4.00. A medium cup of black coffee averages at $2.00. You’re saving yourself 2 bucks a day, plus about 200 calories!)

Introducing the Peace Love Line!

So far in my Letters from Rita and shop owner journey, I’ve only offered custom lettering prints. I’ve done this for a couple reasons, like wanting each print to be unique and because I love it, but partly because I was scared to venture into the world of lots-of-prints-at-once. That means you have to find a printer and actually think about production numbers and not to mention have design / concept ideas to make a cohesive line!

Earlier in the summer I was talking to one of my maker friends, who mixes custom orders with ready-made items in her Etsy shop. I asked her what she thought about my shop being purely custom, and she was honest with me. She said that she loves my work, but wouldn’t know what quote or lyrics to have ask me to letter. If I had a bunch of ready-made prints for her to choose from, it would be easier!

I took that perspective to heart. Even before that conversation I had been experimenting with potentially coming up with a line of prints. But ever SINCE that conversation, I’ve been working really hard at it: not just thinking about it, but DOING it. And I’m SO happy to announce that starting TODAY I finally have a real, live, pretty line of prints! I’m calling it the Peace Love Line. We’ve got peace, love and a lot of creative options (think peonies and mint chocolate chip). The lettering is simple and clean and printed as 5x7s in shiny gold foil!! (Yes, it all started when I was eating mint chocolate chip ice cream 🙂 )

My First Triathlon!

Race: Title 9 Women’s Only Triathlon, put on by Max Performance
Location: Hopkinton State Park, Hopkinton, MA
Weather: 68-70, misty / light rain all day
Total Time: 1:42:08 (111th in my age group – 426 overall)

I’ve been anxiously awaiting this triathlon since I signed up last February! So it’s been a long time coming! When I was 11 I did my first triathlon relay with my parents – I swam, my dad biked, my mom ran. We did that same relay for maybe 4 summers, so I’ve always had some interest in tris, but honestly, I never thought I’d do an entire one on my own! Now that it’s over, I’m so glad I did.

I just want to give a shout out to Max Performance for the really organized, safe race they put on! The process of signing up, getting our packets, and day-of numbering and tracking was really organized. The volunteers were super nice and never made me feel like a newbie (even though they could probably totally tell ;)). There were multiple kayaks and boats in the water watching out for us, and at every turn of the bike and run, there were either two volunteers or a volunteer and a police officer telling us where to go. Also, we all got a pretty fun swag bag!

OK, let’s RECAP!

Nate and I woke up at 5:30 and I immediately ate a half a banana. We left the house around 6:00 (I ate a Lara bar on the way) and got to the race location at 6:30. That was an hour and a half early, because I was really nervous and just wanted to be there and be all set up with plenty of time to spare. My parents came too, like 15 minutes before the start, so I got to say hi (and Mom took 100 pictures). (It was also her birthday!)

I was in the 6th wave of swimmers – the “Newbies Under 35″ wave. I wore a sports bra hybrid with a sport bikini bottom. It worked well! The water felt SO warm compared to the misty fall air. I was so cold during the 25 minute wait for my wave!

Anyways, I pushed my way up to the front of the line because I’m a seasoned swimmer and didn’t want to be stuck between not-as-seasoned swimmers. I just knew that if I was at the front I would push myself harder. And push myself I did! It was only 1/4 mile swim, but apparently I was going a 2:15 pace as I found out later (which isn’t my sprint pace, but fast for that distance). I did a combo of freestyle and breaststroke. I did free when I knew I was going in the right direction, haha! And I switched to breaststroke when I felt like I needed to see where I was going. Plus breaststroke helped me catch my breath a little. The water was wavy, but not too bad. My total swim time was 9:10.

I was pretty winded when I got out of the water and the walk to the transition area was probably 400 yards (felt so long!). So I walked the first half and then picked up the pace to my bike. I dried off with the two small towels I brought. Getting my running leggings on was a feat in itself, and of course my mother was there taking photos the whole time! My first transition was 4:32! Ah! I think most of that was because I mostly walked instead of ran from the swim finish.

The start of the 10 mile bike was a big hill, not cool guys! My strategy for the bike was low gears on the uphill, don’t pedal on the downhills, and crank it out on the flat parts. There were three average hills and one large hill. (Apparently this hill is part of the Boston Marathon route? Cool!) I passed a couple people, but we were never in a big crowd, so that was nice. I kind of took the bike easy, not like EASY, because it was definitely challenging (really glad I had a water bottle with me), but I maybe could have worked a little harder on the hills. I just kept thinking about the run and how I still needed to have some sort of leg muscles! ha! The bike took me 49 minutes and, I’ll be honest, I was really glad when it was over.

My second transition was less than a minute. BAM! Put the bike back, throw off the helmet, take a swig of water, grab my phone, off we go. The 5k run started off the same direction as the bike, UP that big hill! UGH. As soon as I knew I was out of sight from my cheer squad, I started walking up the hill. I took quite a few walk breaks the first mile because as hard as I tried, I just could not catch my breath! I also had to stop and crack my back twice!! You can bet I was so glad to see a water stop. From about mile 1.5 to 2.5 I only took 2 walk breaks and then I told myself I couldn’t walk until I was DONE! Thankfully the run was pretty. We went over the levy and from there you could see the finish line so it really pushed me along! The run took me 37 minutes, which is not my best, but all things considered, I was pretty happy with it!

Overall I’m really happy and I’m already thinking that I might do another one. I didn’t train as well/much as I should/could have (I only went on 5 bike rides, and never did any bricks). Knowing that I did decently this time with only maybe half the training I should have done makes me wonder how well I’d do if I properly trained! Maybe I’ll do the same one again next year! Thanks to my cheer/photo squad (Nate, Mom and Dad) for getting up early with me and keeping me going!

Also, I should mention that I ate ice cream when I got home. And then took a two hour nap 🙂 🙂

Hiking Red Hill | Moultonborough, New Hampshire

Nate and I finally hiked again while we were up in New Hampshire last weekend (the last time was in Acadia National Park in May!)!! It is finally September, but the day we hiked was very hot, like soak through your t-shirt hot! But the views from the top of Red Hill were so worth it. The best part about the summit is that there is a fire tower that you are free to climb, and once you get to the top of that, you have 360 views of all the perfect lakes in the area!

You say Red Hill and you think, oh it’s just a hill! But it’s about 1,400 feet in elevation, so it’s actually a pretty decent trek. It took us an hour to hike up and we spent 25 minutes enjoying the views and the breeze at the top. Going down only took 40 minutes, so the trip in total took a little over 2 hours to complete. We forgot snacks, but I would recommend them if you’re going during the lunch hour like we did! We should have packed a picnic!

The fire tower stairs are STEEP!! When you’re ready to go down, go backwards. Less of a chance of breaking any bones, in my opinion. 😉

This was my 3rd time hiking Red Hill (once when I was little, once in college) and seriously, the views just get better. I’m pretty obsessed with lakes, if you haven’t noticed.

We’re planning to hike Blue Hills Reservation next month and Mount Misery in early November. Any other recs for good hiking in MA / NH? Let me know, please!!
