All Time Faves: Pens

I’ve done the research for you. Here are my favorite brands and types of pens for all different lettering situations!

LETTERING ON PAPER

– ArtWin – The ArtWin double-sided pens are what I use when I am doing a larger piece and need to fill in more space in the letters. The tips are thicker and more flowy, so you get better coverage and spend less time coloring the letters in. These pens are also what I use if I’m lettering over watercolor!

– Sharpie Pen (Fine) – I use these pens when I’m doing loose lettering. The tip is thin and the ink flows well, but I don’t use these for precision, more just for fun or experimenting. They are also my go-to pen for writing in general. So smooth!

– Micron – Micron is my go-to. Their precision can’t be beat and they have all different size pen tips. I tend to buy a range starting from really thick (08) to really, impossibly thin (01), just so I have any type of size I may need while I letter a piece. If we’re keeping track, I do typically stick with the 03 because it’s versatile and usually just what I need.

  • EDIT 2/2/16 – Faber-Castell PITT artists pen and Tombow N15 have recently made their way up into the ranks of my favorite pens! F-C might even top Micron for me!

CHALK LETTERING

– Bistro – I have used MANY a chalk pen and Bistro is definitely my favorite for it’s quality, life-span and price. A lot of chalk pens are like $12, but I can find Bistro at Michaels or A.C.Moore for in the $4 range. And they last a lot longer than other chalk pens, too!

OIL PENS

– Sharpie Oil Pen – These are actually the only oil pens I can find, so I’ve had to adapt. They get clogged if I forget to regularly clean them while I’m working, but overall the ink flows pretty well and the coverage is good. The reason I need the oil pens is to write over acrylic paint on canvas.

WHITE-ON-DARK LETTERING

– Galaxy Marker – I spent months researching and trying to find a good white-on-dark pen. I finally came across the Galaxy Marker. The tip isn’t the most precise, but it definitely shows up on the dark paper (some of the white pens I found just seeped right into it).

– Gelly Roll 08 – Seriously just a white gel pen like we used in 8th grade. This one has a finer tip so it’s good for smaller lettering pieces and details. (not pictured)

– White Gouache – You need to use a brush with this, so it takes a little practice, but know that white gouache is also an option for over dark paper!

So there you go! Try these pens and let me know what you think! OR even better, let me know all your favorite brands on pens to work with!

(none of this is sponsored. I’m just a pen nerd.)

Top 3s of our 3rd Year of Marriage

StephNate156

It’s been 3 years (!) since Nate and I got married on a hot August day on the beach of the Woodbound Inn in Jaffery, NH. 3 years seems like a long time, but if you really think about it, it’s NOT a long time. It’s actually way less than the amount of time Nate and I knew each other before getting married (we were friends for 2.5 years and dating/engaged for 2.5 years!) These 3 years have flown. And I think, for us, the reason is because we haven’t had any of those usual-married-life-moments that MARK time. We haven’t bought a house, we haven’t moved far away, we haven’t been job-less (praise Jesus), and we haven’t had a kid. So 3 years kind of just feels like a lot of happy/interesting months smushed together, only being marked by the occasional trip or big purchase. Maybe I’m not making sense to you, but I totally understand what I mean.

StephNate211

ANYWAYS! Onto our Top 3s of our 3rd year of marriage. We brainstormed at the dinner table last night and thought about all the cool things we did (or interesting things we learned) during our third year of marriage. Here they are!

TOP 3 EVENTS:
Napa Valley – We visited Napa and San Fran in October of last year and basically what we learned is that we love wine country. 😉
Acadia National Park – This was a duel-purpose trip: the first part was for our friends’ wedding, and the second was to explore Acadia. Acadia was gorgeous and I felt so in my element. It was probably the highlight of the last 4 months of my life!
– Buying Kayaks – We had mentioned in the spring that it would be fun to own kayaks. One day Nate started crunching the numbers and realized it was doable(!), so we’ve been exploring nearby ponds and lakes since mid-June! We finally have “our thing” (I mean, one that doesn’t include eating bahaha).

TOP 3 EATS:
Gott’s Roadside Diner – While we were in Napa, we ate at Gott’s twice. TWICE! In 2 days! That’s how good/cool it was. My fish tacos were unreal. Nate forgets what he ate, but he promises it was amazing.
Bagel Alley (but we call him the Bagel Guy) – It has become our Saturday morning ritual to go to the Natick Farmer’s Market, stop by Bagel Alley’s booth and get big, yummy bagels from the Bagel Guy. They we sit on a park bench and contemplate life together. We love Saturdays.
Sparta – I am biased because my sister used to work here, but I’m telling you, this little diner in Newark, Ohio has the best eggs and homefries we’ve ever tasted. Classic American comfort food. I’m writing this at 8 am and man I could go for some of this food right now!!

TOP 3 LEARNING MOMENTS:
Don’t plan every minute – This is something we have learned only in the last couple months. Guys, don’t plan every single minute of your weekend. Be spontaneous, it’s good for your heart. Just this last Sunday, we went to get coffee and then decided right then and there to go on a two mile walk around a lake just because we could. Because we didn’t have anything else planned. And guess what, it was my favorite day of the month so far.
Family is family – Love ’em as they are. Even if it’s hard.
You can’t rush time – Remember my post about feeling in limbo? Well, that post was inspired because of many conversations / fights Nate and I had over the last few months about what we want life to be and when we want all those life things to happen. We had to stop fighting about it, because every single time we came to the same conclusion: you can’t rush things that take time. And I hate that conclusion because I’m the most impatient person ever, so it’s definitely a lesson I’ve been learning.

TOP 3 PHOTO SPOTS:
– Muir Woods, Mill Valley California
– Sunrise kayak on Spofford Lake
– Galavanting in 60+ inches of snow

TOP 3 DATE NIGHTS:
Free date night! We gathered up all our half-used gift cards (you know, the ones with $5.73 left on ’em?) and used them all up. We went to Starbucks, Barnes&Noble and Target and only spent $1.50 of real money. Best date night ever.
Skating at Frog Pond! This was a double date and it had been on our Boston to-do list for ages. Besides waiting for 50 minutes in the freezing cold just to get into the ice rink, it was so fun! We skated soooo slow because we both are terrible, but I loved it anyways.
Seeing the Nutcracker! (apparently we only go on dates in the winter?) We have a bi-yearly tradition of seeing the Nutcracker in Boston because that’s what we did on the night Nate proposed. But this year, to add to the fun, we got a room at the Hyatt and stayed downtown for the night. It was pretty special.

So there you have it! Now you know everything there is to know about #thekristlife. 😉 Happy Anniversary to us! <3

My Newest Tattoo

I’ve had a few people in real life ask about my new tattoo that I got in June, so I wanted to share more about it! This is my 3rd and most involved / ‘biggest’ tattoo so far, even though it isn’t even that big (not even an inch and a half long). This is also the first tattoo that isn’t on the inside of my wrist. It’s on the outside of my wrist, so BIG DIFFERENCE duh. 😉

I grew up in New Hampshire and while I was living there it wasn’t a big deal. You know, you live where your parents live and it’s all good and regular. But ever since I left New Hampshire (8 years ago!), I’ve felt more pride for being FROM New Hampshire. Like New Hampshirites are our own little tribe or something.

I also really miss it. I miss the fresh air and the lakes and vibe. It’s homey and local and full of trees. Not that MA isn’t all of that, but New Hampshire just has a different feeling. It’s more laid back. Also, the areas I’ve lived in this part of MA are way more packed with people (obviously) and I just miss feeling like I have my own space.

So that’s what the New Hampshire outline tattoo is for. 603 PRIDE YO.

Anyways, if you look at my tattoo the other way, you’ll see a sunset scene. I knew I wanted something nature-y inside the outline of NH, but I wasn’t sure what. Another idea I’d had was to do a simple line of the view looking out from the beach at Camp Spofford (my favorite place on earth) (see pic below) But I wasn’t sure how to combine the two ideas without making the tattoo super huge and out of my budget. My tattoo artist Coralynn at Empire Tattoo Boston made the point that it didn’t have to be a perfect replica of the horizon, it could be more representational. So we went with that idea and she drew up a couple options for me and I love how it turned out!

Guys, I am so in love with it. I have so many more ideas, but I am making myself wait a year before I get a new one! (Also isn’t that view just gorgeous?!)

4 Ways to Get Out of Limbo

I recently had a conversation with my best friend about a subject that is probably relevant for most kids in our mid-to-late-20s. We both expressed that we’re feeling in limbo; in general, life is good, but not exactly where either of us want to end up in the long run. There are days when it feels like it’s taking forever to get to where we’d ideally like to be. Certain aspects of the future (like graduating law school, or moving to a new country) have their set timelines, so there’s not much we can do to hurry those events along. But there are ways we can take initiative to feel more content and peaceful with how life is now, while patiently awaiting those bigger things. Here’s are 4 tricks my bestie and I have been putting into practice to get out of that ‘limbo’ feeling:

Cape Cod MA Letters from Rita Blog

4 Ways to stop feeling in Limbo

Shift Your Perspective
Every day I dream about a cozy kitchen with morning light streaming through big windows (exactly the opposite of what I have now). Ideally I’d love to start house hunting, but in this season of life we’re apartment people, it’s just what makes sense. So I remind myself to think about all the things I DO have. It’s the classic way of shifting your perspective to see the good stuff. And guess why it’s classic? Because it works. I have a lovely back porch with comfy chairs, where Nate and I can eat our summer dinners, my own little office and even a working dishwasher! 🙂

Plan for the Near Future (not the super-far-away-future)
If you’re always planning for 5 years down the road, you’re never going to enjoy what you have in your life right now. Live for today. It sounds so cliche, but this little phrase has been helping me a lot lately. Plan a fun date night for tomorrow. Or plan a relaxing get-away weekend with your friends next month. Give yourself something exciting-yet-reachable to look forward to, so you’re not just spending your days just waiting for those long-term goals to happen.

Practice the ‘One Thing’ Rule
Do one thing today that will lead you closer to your big goal. Do you really want a new job? Update your resume today. Itching to go on a big adventure? Block out two weeks on your calendar today. Want to launch an Etsy shop? Think of a shop name today. And take the next small step tomorrow. Take initiative for those big things you desire!

Trust God
It’s easier said than done, but trust God! He is the one who marks our steps and makes the plans for our lives after all. Life is always moving, evolving, and changing and if we put our trust in Him, it will be easier to be content with the season we are in right now. (Pep talk!!!!) “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is fixed on You, because he trusts in You.”  Isaiah 26:3

Cape Cod Letters from Rita Blog

If you’re like me and my best friend, if you’re feeling in limbo between the ‘right now’ and the ‘where you want to be’: A) know that you are not alone and B) try these 4 things. See where these perspective shifts take you. I think you’ll feel better. Know that the big goals and plans will happen in time, but that shouldn’t mean you can’t enjoy life right now!

Coffee Date | Bible, Wedding, Christmas!

August is upon us! I’m ready for the craziest month of my summer! I’ll be traveling for weddings and photo shoots every weekend, and on top of that decided that I want to commit to blogging here 3 times a week. Which is like, OK, but how? Well I’m pre-scheduling some posts and also relying on good old WINGING IT. Because I do what I want. Not busy. Wildly productive. 😉

unnamed

My husband Nate has a goal this year to memorize more Bible verses. One verse a week was the original goal, but if it takes longer than one week to memorize, that’s OK too. He told me that the idea behind it was because in many situations when talking about his faith, he has a verse (or principal from a Bible story) that he can reference, but many times doesn’t know where to find it in the Bible. So he thought if he memorizes those frequently-talked-about passages and verses, he can actually point someone in the right direction so they can continue reading the Bible! I love my man. Pictured above was the first verse he picked, which is ironically one of the few Bible verses I know by heart already, so I got to help him out in memorizing it that week! I’ll keep you updated on new verses he picks.

You may remember me doing collaborations last summer with some bloggers in the Boston area. The sweet Courtney of Jeune Amour emailed me many months later (thanks for remembering me, friend!) and commissioned me to hand-letter small signs for her June wedding! She sent me the most luscious, textured paper and I experimented with many different types of pens and ink before I settled on using gouache! Guys, it was soooo good. I mixed a shade of gray-ish, navy blue pigment and had the best time lettering those little signs. Courtney just recently shared her wedding images on her blog! Go look! It’s a dream!

PeaceLoveLine

I have a couple new projects in the works for my little lettering biz! A new line of PRINTS! My first ever non-custom, ready-to-order, really cute, really pretty line of prints! They debut in September! I’m giving you a little sneak peek above, you’re welcome 😉 I’m also working on Christmas print/card designs! Yeah, it’s only August, and yeah, I have been listening to Pentatonix’s Christmas album to get in the right mindset, but YAY. Christmas prints/cards!

That’s all I have to fill you in on right this minute. What’s new with you?!
